Staying healthy through the seasons can be tricky especially when you are on the go all the time, have a family, run a biz … you know where I’m going with all of this. So many balls are being juggled at once that thinking about ways to stay healthy is usually on the back burner. My tips to stay healthy through any season will change that!

As a health coach in private practice for over 12 years I have found a few simple tricks that can help keep you (and your family if you’ve got one) stay as healthy and energized as possible throughout any season.

Quick side note: it is healthy to get the occasional cold or fever.

It’s actually the body’s way of getting rid of toxins that have built up. What I’m talking about is reducing and eliminating things such as the flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, allergies, etc. that take weeks even months to recover from.

There is nothing healthier than eating foods that are in season. It’s the way nature intended. How could she have gotten that wrong? Pears, celery and mandarin oranges in winter; apricots, strawberries, blueberries and cherries in the spring; cherry tomatoes, peaches, radishes and green beans in the summer; apples, persimmons, walnuts and rainbow carrots in the fall.


Enough said! When you sleep the body repairs itself and detoxes naturally. Experts say to get between 6 and 8 hours of sleep every night. I find the right amount varies per person. If you wake up refreshed you know you’re doing something right. If you feel wired at night, it’s hard to fall asleep and then you wake up and it’s like you never slept a wink you know the body is literally tired from the inside out!


Our bodies are mostly water so it just makes plain ol’ sense to makes sure we stay hydrated. Drink at least 1/2 your body weight of water in ounces, daily. Example 100 lb = 50 oz. of water daily. In the summer months when you are sweating more it’s good to drink even more. The Environmental Working Group ( has amazing information on water safety and bottled water. The Edden’s personally have a whole house filtration system but I’ve read that there are reliable filters for your tap that are more reasonably priced.


What we don’t always realize is that certain foods have become heavily processed with pesticides and other chemicals that affect the quality of the food and for sure affect our health. While I realize it’s not always possible to go 100% organic I have seen dramatic increases in my client’s health when they avoid the dirty dozen fruits and veggies and start eating more grass fed, antibiotic free, wild caught foods assuming they are meat and fish eaters. 5. IF YOU CAN’T READ IT, DON’T EAT IT (or do your best to eat less of it)

Chemicals in foods are known to lower your metabolism and cause cravings not to mention they are taxing on the liver which is one of the major detox organs of the body. A good rule of thumb is if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, how can we expect the body to know what to do with it?


This one speaks for itself. Refined sugar paralyzes the immune system when you eat it. It sort of explains why we have such a spike in illness in the winter months…we just came off of several sugary holidays….Halloween, December Holidays, New Years and now we’re moving into Valentine’s Day! When cravings arise there is nothing better than grabbing a delicious piece of organic fruit chocked full of vitamins and minerals.
