Confused By Your Cravings? These 4 Tips Will Help! | Jenn Edden Coaching

Cravings! Some people have them every day and others only experience them from time to time.

Let’s be honest, regardless of the frequency, they’re ANNOYING.

I will be the first to admit it since I’ve had cravings for pretty much my whole life starting when I was just a kid. I remember not being able to stop eating Oreo’s my mom would buy for us. I’d say I’ll eat just 3 or 4 and a WHOLE ROW later with some milk and I was still craving more. Back then it was kinda funny but fast forward to my 20’s and I was still having the problem and it wasn’t all that funny anymore.

Now I was worried about gaining weight from all those calories. I didn’t even think about how that was affecting the anxiety I was experiencing. And my energy, it was shot. One day I’d be bouncing off the walls and the next day I felt like I was coming down with something barely able to get to the gym.

It was no fun having energy the first few days of the week and then watching my body crash come Friday afternoon. Or how about being “good” all week by eating relatively clean and then sabotaging yourself over the weekend because those cravings got the best of you despite every valiant effort on your part to “not do that again!”.

I knew some people had the same issues, but they just put up with it. Made it ok and moved on…

The problem I had is that I would not quit! I came up with idea after idea after idea on how to do it differently this time so that I didn’t keep sabotaging those weight loss/get back in shape/take my life to the next level goals that I had FOREVA.

If you’re read this far into my story I’m gonna guess that you’re not a quitter either. 🙂

The thing with Type A peeps like us is that we don’t quit. No matter what.

After all you’re willing to try anything, put 110% into reaching your goal, won’t let other people get you down for very long…you have what I consider to be “temporary” setbacks. You get down on yourself, fall off the wagon, let go of your goals for a little bit, but then you hit ENOUGH. And when you hit that place nothing will stop you.

I recall the million times I’d try a new diet, something a friend recommended because well, it worked for her. So I figured, heck what do I have to lose it worked for her it’s gotta work for me :(.  Not only was I wrong but when it didn’t work it made me doubt myself and my ability to ever get in great shape and for sure to finally get rid of those cravings. What I didn’t realize and what no one really talks about is that my body was different from my friends body so how could I get the same exact results. I was setting myself up to fail and didn’t even know it!

I have countless stories I can share of everything I tried to stop those late afternoon and evening cravings from coming on. I knew they were sabotaging my results but broken promise after broken promise after broken promise and I was still doing it.

To say it was annoying was to put it mildly.

Honestly if I had to lay it all on the line I would say that my anxiousness that hung out in the background wasn’t helping me get any closer to my goals…You know the one you have that you “might not ever get what you want” or “when will this stop” or “why haven’t I figured this out yet” or “why can I control everything else in my life but this one thing”.

YEAH. I’ve said all those things to myself for many many many many many years.

Then after trial and error and trial and error and trial and error and well… did you ever hear how Thomas Edison invented the light bulb…  Thomas Edison’s teachers said he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He was fired from his first two jobs for being “non-productive.” As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

I can’t say enough how much I LOVE this story…Edison didn’t fail, he just figured out 1000 ways how not to make a light bulb! Brilliant.

Here’s something I learned along the way with all my failed attempts at learning to kick and manage sugar, taking total control of my anxiety while getting fit at the ripe ol’ age of 43:

Same mindset = Same results

You can not get different results if you don’t change how you see things. You got into the mess you’re in because of how you think so unless that changes your results will be the same. Read a new book that expands your mind and opens you up to new possibilities. I did this recently by reading “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” and my whole world opened up!

Same workout = No change in the body

You can not keep doing the same workouts and think you’re going to eventually get in shape. The body needs to be challenged in order for the muscles to change. Not motivated to do that on your own. Find a trainer that resonates with you and buy a 10 pack. I hired a trainer 3 months ago to help me shake things up and I can’t believe how much my body is changing!

Same diet = Cravings and B-O-R-I-N-G

Your body needs you to rotate foods every season. You can not find one diet for the rest of your life and stick with it. Experts might disagree with me but let them. The body needs different nutrients seasonally and over time, for me about every decade, I see my body literally change and with that I need to adjust my diet! Right now I’m eating a grain free hot cereal in the morning after my shot of apple cider vinegar/apple juice combo. When I’m hungry mid morning I eat an apple with almond butter. Yummmmm

Same stubborn cravings = Your body and mind are asking for a change

This is a biggie for women. Have you had the same cravings for a long time? If so, denying yourself the foods your body is craving is not going to fix the problem. It’s only going to make it worse. Your body and mind are asking for change and when you give it what it needs the cravings will change or even disappear!

Yes. I’ve seen this time and time again. My cravings are a clue something is out of balance. When clients come to me this is the #1 thing we tweak first. I am masterful at being in your blind spot and figuring out what needs to change. After all if you could see it, you would have changed it already!!

Now take a step back (and a deep breath) and rather than judge yourself for those cravings take the time to INVESTIGATE THEM.
